CAD Cell

The CAD cell is a flame sensor in oil burners that shifts resistance based on light. If no flame is detected, it signals a system lockout; if flame is present, it allows fuel flow to continue.

The CAD cell (cadmium sulfide photoresistor) is a flame-detecting sensor used in oil-fired burner and boiler systems that changes resistance based on light—high resistance in darkness, low when flame is present—to confirm proper ignition and maintain safety protocols. When the burner lights, the CAD cell’s resistance drops below a threshold (typically 1000 Ω), signaling the control to keep the fuel flow going—and if it fails to detect the flame, the system locks out until the issue is resolved.
